While renovating an existing building, visionary architect Rohit Misra explored the ornamental possibilities of gold leaf to increase the building's presence on a crowded streetscape. American Burnish relished the opportunity to tip-gild a neoclassical facade on one of the most fashionable avenues in the world.

Tip-gilding architectural details to accentuate 3- dimensional form is a process akin to drawing.

Selecting the style and number of ornaments to gild required a pleasurable collaboration with Rohit, working first from blueprints and photos, and then from the building itself, with add- ons as our gilding progressed.

On the east side of Madison Avenue, the facade now glows in ambient daylight. When twilight arrives, specially designed lighting creates the glitter of an opening night on Broadway!

Weather plays a key role in the success of EXTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL GILDING. Gilders must adjust formulas and techniques to allow for outdoor conditions. Secured to a scaffold high above a sidewalk, our crew worked during a July heat wave that transformed the city into a blast furnace. Individual sheets of double-weight gold leaf were held in a folder to keep them from blowing away, and then applied to a varnish formulated to accommodate the heat.
